We’re a small psychodrama group for lawyers. We work on our feet, in a room where it’s safe to be honest. Some of it is courtroom work. A lot of it is personal. And more often than not, the two turn out to be the same thing.

Why psychodrama, for lawyers?

Some of what we do is about the courtroom. A lot of it isn’t. We often find that what a lawyer is stuck on in voir dire is really something personal, something that keeps them from seeing the issue clearly. Work that through, and the lawyering tends to open up on its own. We make room for both here: the case work, and personal work that has nothing to do with any case.

In the courtroom

In voir dire, instead of vetting jurors for bias, we talk with people about the real issues and start building a group, with the lawyer leading. From there, the rest of the trial is about telling the story of the case, with its universal truths carried all the way through.

With clients

We reverse roles and step into the client’s shoes, which reminds us how hard it can be just to walk into a lawyer’s office. They don’t know what to expect, they don’t know the process, and the subject may be painful to talk about. We work on how to make people comfortable and build trust, so we can really learn their story and tell it well through every stage of the case.

The personal work

Sometimes the block in a case turns out to be personal. Just as often, the personal work stands on its own. If someone wants to work on a personal issue, any personal issue at all, we’re all in. That work tends to change what a person can see, in the courtroom and everywhere else.

Who it’s for: most of the lawyers we work with are people we already know. Beyond that, we’re here for lawyers who represent people, not institutions: criminal defense, personal injury, consumer, that kind of practice, not government or corporate work. We’ll sometimes make room for a lawyer’s staff. If we haven’t met yet, say hello before you register and tell us a little about your work.
